#2, I used hardware store naphtha; a gallon is about the same cost as 2 or 3 large tins (then), now plastic bottles, of Ronsonol.
#1, my cleaner had a fairly tight-fitting metal lid; a bit of gaffer's tape on all four sides sealed it quite well. (I noticed the odor when I first tried it, without the cover, so made that change quickly.)
