DEAR JANET,
Did you say "Dark rum"? Yes, we in Barbados know much about dark rum; Cockspur,
Mound Gay, Old Brigand even more from the surrounding islands.
Wait...Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, you said, "Darkroom"! "Never mind!" (Emily Litella,
1978)

I'm not sure that they have such a short life as much as that I used the
enlarger a fair amount. I usually keep an extra bulb but last time I switched
the bulbs I didn't order another so got caught off guard in the middle of a
project. Fortunately the place I ordered from got it there overnight for very
little charge. Well, and they are close by.
I love being able to come to pure silver to ask questions because there is so
much knowledge and info here. I was just telling a friend about you guys. I
feel like y'all know just about everything for the darkroom.

For bulbs with such a short life, run them on a dimmer for focussing and
framing, and gentle on/off prolongs life.

Yes, I understand that they need to be packed well.
200 hours sounds good but I don't have any idea how many hours I
actually get. I couldn't guess
if I get less or that many but maybe I will wear gloves next time I
change the bulb. Thank you!

I think it's not the shipping, but rather the packaging. I
wouldn't want a projection bulb
shipped in a little tiny box- I want it in a big box with a lot
of packaging!
The price quoted is not far out of line for retail. This lamp
has a rated life of 200 hours. Life
of halogen lamps is reduced by skin oils on the bulb itself
(sometimes radically reduced!),
and by moving while it is hot.
Amazon lists it as low as $9+4.99 shipping from "njcamera", and
as high as $49.30 from
"Entegron"
If I were buying, I'd go with Unique, and see if there was
anything else I could buy from them
it the same time, to 'amortize' the shipping.

I just use it a good bit - haven't ever moved it about. I do

I'll ck with Amazon and Freestyle. I don't remember EVER
paying $10 or $11 to ship
that tiny box. Just thought I'd check here. I usually shop B&H
and Unique but have
used Freestyle a few times. I'll just bite the bullet and pay
the price, whatever that is.
I always hope to find the little bulb at a decent price, but...
hasn't happened yet.
Thank you for taking the time to reply!

Check Freestyle Photographic too. Using a color head, and the
color
filters, if I understand you correctly, would be an advantage.
Those
filters can be used instead of black and white contrast
filters. Shop
around. There maybe cheaper bulbs. Are you moving the
enlarger
around? Most of the time when I have had a problem with a
bulb, its
been because I moved the enlarger. IF they are going quickly,
it
might be another issue, and if I had to guess on no other
information,
Id guess the power supply. Good luck
