When a lamp is cold, there’s very little chance of filament damage from any
shock that would not also show on the packaging. Major bulb manufacturers used
to ship projection lamps (incandescent and halide) in simple light cardstock
boxes with virtually no extra packing material.
Also, regarding bulb life, remember that “rated life” means that half of a test
batch will last that long. The life-testing process is simple: power up
X-number (let’s say 100) lamps; at the point that half (50) have burned out,
that’s the “life expectancy”. That number is usually fudged a bit to give a
shorter life (thereby making you think “Brand Y” makes great lamps”). At least
that’s how it used to be done...

Yes, I understand that they need to be packed well.
200 hours sounds good but I don't have any idea how many hours I actually
get. I couldn't guess if I get less or that many but maybe I will wear
gloves next time I change the bulb. Thank you!

I think it's not the shipping, but rather the packaging. I wouldn't want a
projection bulb shipped in a little tiny box- I want it in a big box with a
lot of packaging!
The price quoted is not far out of line for retail. This lamp has a rated
life of 200 hours. Life of halogen lamps is reduced by skin oils on the bulb
itself (sometimes radically reduced!), and by moving while it is hot.
Amazon lists it as low as $9+4.99 shipping from "njcamera", and as high as
$49.30 from "Entegron"
If I were buying, I'd go with Unique, and see if there was anything else I
could buy from them it the same time, to 'amortize' the shipping.

I just use it a good bit - haven't ever moved it about. I do use the red

I'll ck with Amazon and Freestyle. I don't remember EVER paying $10 or $11
to ship that tiny box. Just thought I'd check here. I usually shop B&H and
Unique but have used Freestyle a few times. I'll just bite the bullet and
pay the price, whatever that is. I always hope to find the little bulb at a
decent price, but... hasn't happened yet.
Thank you for taking the time to reply!

Check Freestyle Photographic too. Using a color head, and the color
filters, if I understand you correctly, would be an advantage. Those
filters can be used instead of black and white contrast filters. Shop
around. There maybe cheaper bulbs. Are you moving the enlarger around?
Most of the time when I have had a problem with a bulb, its been because I
moved the enlarger. IF they are going quickly, it might be another issue,
and if I had to guess on no other information, Id guess the power supply.
Good luck

The bulb burned out mid-project last night and I don't have another oneBay has ESJ for $13.75 with free shipping. A google search will have
hand. I have always used the ESJ projection lamp, 82V 85W bulb. It's
$21.99 at Unique Photo and the agent said shipping would be "$11 or $12".
I only print black and white so does that mean the color head is
irrelevant for my purposes? Might that also mean I could use a less
expensive bulb? I seem to go through them way too often.
Any suggestions? Thank you.
