Did I mention that I used my F2As exclusively with motor drives. I don't think
I removed the motor drives for over a decade. And they performed as per my
previous post below.
***And another thing: When I needed to buy new equipment I learned to call the
repair shops to ask which model of camera or studio strobe they saw least. When
I called Marty Forscher to ask if I should buy the brand new F3 or the older
F2A, he recommended the F2A because he saw MANY F3s coming in for repair (his
was an authorized Nikon warranty repair shop). He said that, once they worked
out the bugs in a few years, the F3 would be the better buy but, unless I could
afford to wait (which I couldn't), I should go with the F2A which I did. I did
the same with Peter Lew when I had to replace my old Balcar strobes and he
recommended those old MIL SPEC Speedotrons...in 1980. I threw them away last
year, not because the electronics failed but because the salt air here had
corroded them beyond safe use! It is a really good idea to ask the best repair
person you know which model of equipment they see least because THAT is the one
that is most reliable.

I believe I mentioned before that I would go through a few (300 roll) cases of
both 35mm Panatomic X and 35mm Kodachrome 25 per year when I was shooting
fashion and advertising from the early 70s through to the late 80s...easily a
thousand rolls or more per year. I used two Nikon F2As. One of them would fail
every 2 or so and need repair but they were true workhorses. I still have them
and they both work though, when I shoot film these days, it is 4X5, 5X7 or
8X10.
My oldest chimera is the cherry wood (with brass hardware) 5X7 Kodak with the
Packard shutter and leather bellows. I still shoot with it! Amazing! I think
Richard researched it once and it was made very early in the 20th century.

A friend used to run FM's for modelling tests ("cattle calls") . He got them
cheap because people were upgrading to AF.
They would last about 6 months, running 20 to 30 rolls a day.
That's not exactly eternal life, but it's more film than most amateur
photographers would shoot in a lifetime.
