Yes, the MD-11 or 12 Motor drives will greatly reduce shutter life.

He always used the cameras with a motor drive, which probably didn't help

That's not exactly eternal life, but it's more film than most amateur
photographers would shoot in a lifetime.
I wonder if I could guess from that when my (now) rarely used FE-2 will
quit.
