I believe collodion is nitrocellulose dissolved in a mixture of 
alcohol and ether.

Yes, it was the basis of the "wet plate" technology that was used 
from the mid 1850's through the 1880's, at which point it was largely 
supplanted by the gelatin based "dry" plates.
