Dear Gene,

Thank you for your enthusiasm - and thank you to Richard K and Eric N for advice on the tank cleaning. I will try the bleach on one and report - if wurst comes to worst as it did last Oktoberfest, I'll still have 12 tanks left, The flight from the darkroom looks like it will prove as beneficial to me as the flight from medium format has been.

I find it funny to see this sort of change and the pressures it engenders. I suspect it is much the same in many fields of endeavour - even those that have no obvious connections to electronics or digital packaging. My own profession is undergoing major revamping here in our state. Oh, people's teeth are still much the same and their self-neglect will never disappear, but now they have been advertised and promoted to a state of mind that is at once querulous and gullible. People on one hand demand sanctuary from their fears of toxicity ( or deliverance to some other chemical hazard as yet unimagined or unadvertised...) and then leap headlong to bathe their most delicate biological bits in radiation of various wavelengths and as much peroxide bleach as can be packed into a gel without actually exploding. All on the basis of TV advertisement channels and heavy newspaper promotions.

But we can still make sense, and health, and the occasional bit of beauty sticking to older technologies. Just as we can turn out a world-class print in our little darkrooms, so can I turn out good teeth ( Sometimes false, but then dentists are always making false impressions....) using nothing more than a wax knife and an alcohol lamp. And I can toast marshmallows over the lamp.

    Uncle Dick
