Do you happen to know how the F3 compares to the FG in size? I'd found a site once that gave all kinds of info on older Nikons. I'm gonna look through for it again. The F3 is somewhat bigger and heavier but remains much smaller than most actual AF cameras. Thanks, to you who have replied! I'd like to replace it with something that is similar, but a little better is ok. :o) I like the simplicity of it, I like manual, and I like the metering system. Any suggestions?(I also have a Hasselblad and a F100, but want a simple little manual body. That's what I use most.)Thanks so much.Janet ===================================================================== ======================================== To unsubscribe from this list, go to www.freelists.org and logon to your account (the same e-mail address and password you set-up when you subscribed,) and unsubscribe from there.Dear Janet,FM series (the last FM-3A has also an aperture automatic exposure) and FE series (aperture automatic exposure, easily switched to manual) have a similar metering system (60% in the 12mm circle, 40% outside). The F3 models have a slightly different ratio (80%-20%). I've a pair of F3s and it's one of my favorite, a pro camera, very rugged but still compact. Most of actual Nikon SLRs use matrix metering but still have the traditional 60%-40% metering. They're also very easy to switch back to manual exposure. If you've still a lot of manual lenses, then the last low-end bodies may not accept them easily. Finally, the FG should be easy to find second-hand at a ridiculous price.-- Claudio Bonavolta http://www.bonavolta.ch====================================================================== ======================================= To unsubscribe from this list, go to www.freelists.org and logon to your account (the same e-mail address and password you set-up when you subscribed,) and unsubscribe from there. To unsubscribe from this list, go to www.freelists.org and logon to your account (the same e-mail address and password you set-up when you subscribed,) and unsubscribe from there.
FG Width: 136mm Height: 87.5mm Thickness: 54mm Weight: 490g F3 Width: 148.5mm Height: 96.5mm Thickness: 65.5mm Weight: 700g 25.4mm = 1 inchAs you can see the major difference is in weight as this is a pro camera built like a tank while the FG was a pretty lower end camera.
If you wear glasses, then, I strongly suggest the HP viewfinder which lets you view the whole frame without moving the eye around. You'll need some time to get accustomed to the 80%-20% center-weighted metering but once done it is very efficient. My favourite use was in auto mode, selecting an area with a reflection of around 18% (you'll soon have a grey card in your head after a couple of months with such camera ...), lock the exposure (an easy to find button in front of the camera), do the focus, re-frame and shoot.
