Bleach is one of the most commonly used substance to kill mold, at least
surfical deposits in buildings. Not sure how it would apply to cleaning the
slides though and certainly could not be used in a Nikon scanner but could
be applied onto the glass of a flatbed one.

     I think that is an important point. The mold would be 
likely to infect the scanner. Mold is very difficult to get 
rid of once it gets started. There _are_ substances which 
kill mold but they are extremely toxic to people too. Again, 
I recommend talking to an expert conservator to find out the 
latest thinking on this.
