Scanning the moldy slides is not an option, since he does own such a device, but wouldn't that add the risk of contaminating other slides
and film with mold and ruin them in the future?

I think that is an important point. The mold would be likely to infect the scanner. Mold is very difficult to get rid of once it gets started. There _are_ substances which kill mold but they are extremely toxic to people too. Again, I recommend talking to an expert conservator to find out the latest thinking on this.
