Some slick tricks for the hot sun with low humidity environs.....

  1. Get a cheap cotton handkerchief the type they make those do rag hats out
of (farmers hankies) get it wet and tie it around your neck. Keeping your neck
cooler via evaporation, it also keeps your body cooler as well.

  2. full sugar gum. the sugar helps with bolld sugar levels that will effect
you even if you have no diabetes, in the hot low humidity areas. The gum has
the added advantage of activating your saliva glands so you keep your mouth
hydrated. That will keep you feeling better than just drinking water
periodically.

  3. Don't get a styrofoan cooler for the DV trip. The ice will melt way to
fast in them compared to a better insulated version. But if you are determined
to use just that form, get a cheap blanket to wrap around it and further cut
out light from the container. Then you can also wrap it in white colored
garbage bags to give it added insulation without adding to the color (black)
that will absorb heat.

  4. Forget about it getting dirty, go with light tan or white as the colors
for clothing. Darker colors especially black will absorb heat and make you much
hotter.

  5. Get those silly hang around your neck small fans. That and that neck
kerchief from #1 will keep you cooler. It looks silly, but when there is no
breeze that small little bit will be a god send.

  6. Stay away from caffeine drinks. They eliminate moisture in your body.
The best thing you can take with you is sugared lemonade. That and lots of
plain water.

  7. Three thibngs are used to rehydrate a body that has become dehydrayted.
Potassium (banans) Sucrose (anything sugared will work), and sodium (salted
peanuts) So combining #6 with #7 you should have banas, salted peanuts (also
has protein in them) and sugared drinks (non carbonated that also wicks away
moisture)

  8. Sit in your vehicle if possible whiel waiting for the right light. Under
an umbrella in those environs (just like where I live) you can sunburn just as
bad from the reflections. An umbrella will do very little to avoid that kind
of burn.

  9. Eat something small every couple fo hours. Preferably something with
protein. A small piece of Jerky or those peanuts from above are good, along
with bite sized pieces of cheese.

  10. Don't hurry. In the heat you will be worse off hurrying and making
mistakes than taking your time and not raising a sweat (you realy won't seat
much but you will raise your thermal output hurrying)

  11. If you don't care what you look like, periodially dump some water on
your head under a good hat. Your head gives off the most heat, and in the no
humidity it will evaporate and keep your whole body much cooler. That is if
you have enough water with you, which you better. (a couple of gallons of just
plain water per day. You will be surprised how much you will go through.
