Some time ago I posted a formula for a combination toner supposed to be similar to the late, lamented, Kodak Polytoner. At that time one of the members of this list reported trying this and that it didn't work. I mixed some tonight and had success in toning a couple of different kinds of paper. On possibility is that the other person used new KRST and new KBT, my test was made with freshly bought KBT but my KRST was bought in bulk about ten years ago.
Here is the formula I used:

Combination Selenium and Polysulfide Toner

Water 500.0 ml
Kodak Brown Toner 320.0 ml
Kodak Selenium Toner 80.0 ml
Sodium Carbonate 160.0 ml
Water to make 1.0 liter

Dilute 1 part stock to 3 parts water for use.

The hydration of the carbonate was not specified in the orginal article with the formula, I used monohydrated carbonate because that's what I have.
This toner works very quickly, a noticable change in color appearing in one minute. Full toning appears to take place in about three minutes. I extended toning on one print to 7 minutes but there was no visible change after about 3 minutes.
I toned three prints, two on Agfa Multicontrast and one print on old Kodak Polycontrast. The Polycontrast print toned only a little to a purple color, the Agfa toned strongly to a purplish brown. These were normally processed RC prints, I soaked each about one minute before toning. There was no indicating of staining or other problems.
BTW, the Kodak Brown Toner was bought from Freestyle earlier this week. It was dark brown and so was the toner in all the bottles on the shelf. I haven't bought any KBT for years, my memory is that the last stuff I got was clear. Has anyone else gotten any recently? Whatever the color the stuff seems to work OK.
The formula above is from:
_Modern Photography_ Dec, 1953, p.87 Attributed to Kodak.

I would like to hear from anyone else who tries it.
BTW, I mixed enough for only 200 ml working solution for the test.
