Hi I have been fascinated by this thread.
Has anybody asked the National Federation of the Blind about this?
The US NFB surely wouldn't permit it?

But that is the point. I am merely guessing at this, but I suspect that when APH agreed to license the firmware, it asked for and received an exclusivity on the ability to play braille related file types to avoid competition with the PTP1. It couldn't control what Humanware or Himms did with their machines, but APH could control what the manufacturer of the PTP1/Book Port plus could do to create a secure market for itself. In other words APH sought and received an exclusive right to give itself a competative edge over its closest competator.

Mind you I'm just guessing, but it seems like a reasonable supposition.

Does it bite? If you own a PTP1 in the U.S., yes, if you owna Book Port Plus, no. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger Stewart" <paganus@xxxxxxxxx>

However, I understand that the Book Port Plus can read .brf files and it is identical to the Plextalk but just uses a bit different firmware. Weird stuff man!

It is precisely because the Bookport plus can read them that the Plextalk cannot. I'm sure that when APH licensed the firmware, they required exclusivity knowing that there was a virtually identical device out there.
From APH's point of view, it's natural and good business practice.

This is a very odd one as my PTP Pocket is authorized to read NLS books and these .brf files came from Web Braille so I'm allowed to use them. This then begs the question as to why the Victor Reader can read them with US English firmware while the Plextalk can't? Hope this gets resolved in a future firmware release.

Thanks.

Roger
