Be careful!

Stupid me.......

I blindly followed Rein's instructions without paying attention. Now I
have a nice clean HDD in one of my PCs.

Double check to make sure /dev/sda is not the HDD in your system!
Luckily it was a spare workstation here at work so nothing was lost.

In this case thE system has an SATA drive that Linux recognizes as /dev/sda

My USB stick is actually /dev/sdb!

Here is the procedure for storing the config information on the USB stick you
boot from.
I started from scratch with an empty 2 GB sandisk cruizer.

* Boot from the live CD
* su (root)
* Connect the USB stick
* start fdisk /dev/sda
* look at the partitioning with 'p'
* delete the partition with 'd' and '1'
* make a new 700 MB FAT16 partition (nr. 1) with 'n', 'p', '1', 'M700+'
* set type to FAT16 with 't' and '6'
* make bootable with 'a' ,'1'
* Make data partition from the rest (n, p, 2, Enter, Enter, t, 6)

* goto the MCN menue (below 'ham')
* start the USB stick wizard (fixmbr) and follow the instructions
use /dev/sda.

* reboot from the USB stick (remove the CD).
* goto /mnt
* set the ownership of /mnt/sda2 to guest:users with
* 'chown -R guest:users /mnt/sda2`
* cd into /mnt/sda2
* 'touch pskmailperm.tar.gz'

* copy attached files (saveit.sh and saveit.pl) into ~/pskmailutils.
* make a directory ~/.gpsdrive
* change the Desktop icon of saveit: change the application to

* click the icon and watch the info being saved to the /mnt/sda2 directory...

* Configure fldigi and pskmail client (don't forget 'save config' in fldigi)
* Click the saveit icon on the desktop again and watch your config being saved
to /mnt/sda2

* Reboot from the USB stick
* click the 'getfromstick' icon and watch the small hourglass while it gets
your stuff from /mnt/sda2

Enjoy... no workarounds needed.
