the ubuntus all use the same kernel and initrd, I think the problem the original poster had will still be there no matter what specific ubuntu live cd is used. I looked at puppy linux, I see it has an option to save your settings I have had no problems with the latest livecd on either the Dell Latitude laptop or the work horse IBM A20 laptop.
