Also I'm not clear on gpsd. Do I start the daemon at boot and what do I enter when I run dpkg to configure gpsd ? I can't get it to run, I get this error

Starting GPS daemon: gpsdgpsd: can't run with neither control socket nor devices
 - failed.

Well I'll just answer my own question. After an hour or so of sifting through the mail list, I found that I didn't have this:

sudo cpan Net::GPSD

Both problems solved.
