here are my thoughts about the subject...
On my test-Pi2, the server with fldigi-3.21.83 has been running now for 26
days. There must be a reason why I am not seeing crashes. This setup is
running with a cheap C-media soundcard and pulseaudio. I think more testing
is necessary. On the client (a pi3) which uses Portaudio, fldigi crashes
when I am not selecting the actual modems but leave the default. Maybe the
Alsa config must be more precise? What happens when you compile a new
fldigi version with the old C-source for the PSKR modem?
I would hate to use a java modem on the Pi, because of the CPU load.
Moreover the number of modes available on fldigi makes pskmail more
flexible, and useable under bad condx. But maybe we can find somebody
willing to look into porting modes like DomEx and THOR to java?
I would hate to put time into modems instead of further devt. of pskmail,
it feels a lot like reinventing the wheel. But I agree we should put
together a list of requirements for a preferred modem set for pskmail.
My wish list: PSK, PSKxxxR, MFSK, DominoEx, THOR.
I would like to put more time into optimizing the protocol timing for
running the present modes on the Pi3. The client looks o.k., but there seem
to be a few quirks in the server.
With regard to ARDOP, this looks like an attempt of the winlink
environment to develop a system which takes the features of pskmail into
winlink (to me winmor sounds like "killing windows"). I have not seen an
exact protocol spec. The mode list is limited to 4PSK. This is the OFDM
environment of pactor. Maybe somebody can test the multicarrier modes in
fldigi to see if they are as effective as the pskmail modem set? I know
pactor works fine with big sgnals...
ARDOP is developed in .NET, which is very far away from an environment I
am feeling happy in. Moreover you would need MONO to run on Linux. I’d
rather port the fldigi modems to perl than to C# :-)
The phone modems use java, they were ported by John, VK2ETA.
A chat function is already present in pskmail. You can even telnet
directly into IRC, or as I often do use the APRS messaging function for a
live chat...

about 2 hours from now. We will be on the camper parking lot of the HAM
RADIO exhibition in Friedrichshafen from sunday onwards... running pskmail
APRS on Mintpup of course...
