Yeah that sounds really neat...

I figure it'll be easier to tweak and see what looks good as far as that goes 
once we got it live

FYI currently this isn't in the game but it's planned to be and might be
helpful here but - we could have a script function to change the color of a
model.

the puff balls could be different colors, or they could be subtly different
colors like really pale blue and green and stuff.

or, they could change color over time indiviudally

we could even have a few special ones that were nearer to the map than the
rest that were actual point light sources (as they changed color so does
their light?)

not saying any of this necesarily fits with what you were planning eric but
pointing out some options we have (:
