Basically yeah, you're dead in the beginning but you don't know it, you play 
through the chapters which is basically the strange man revealing your life to 
you, then at the end he returns your life to you and you're alive for freemode.

i kinda wish we could put tribute to high plains drifter in here cause in
this game you start off dead then become alive when you are in the free mode
right?

unfortunately it was the other way around in high plains drifter... he was
alive and they murdered him, and then he came back as a ghost and screwed em
all hehe
