What happens if you're on a router, like the 2Wire kind where the computer only sees the private address?

Hi,

There are loads of companies that will allow you to register a domain name with them and then will map this onto your home machine's IP address. It doesn't even matter if your IP changes because you can install software that will alter the IP corresponding with your domain name if it changes.

I personally use www.dyndns.com it is free. There are plenty of others though. Many routers can automatically update your IP address if it changes too - avoiding the need for special software.

Hi all,
I use a server right now that is hosted by a company, but I am only allowed to use it because my friend's father works at said company. Now, however, he has resigned his position because of his National Guard status going back to active, and I do not know how much longer I will have the server available/hosted. My question is this: I have a pc that I could put some kind of linux on to make it a server. How do I get a domain for it? I know you can buy domains and server space (I was looking at xoxus.net) but I really only need a way for people to enter a url and get to my server; in other words, a domain registered to my box. Is this possible and how do I do it? Thanks for any help.

Have a great day,
Alex
