Might there be an update available for your browser?  If so, you may be
trying to work around an already squashed bug.

Okay, I tried it.  I also found an example online, and it looks like
this is the fault of the browser on my braille notetaker; it seems to
not honor the reaonly attribute.  Thanks for the help, though.
