This is easy enough to run. I wouldn't recommend running it from a home connection, as that can be reliable. I run three linodes, $20 per, which is fairly cheap. Disk space isn't amazing, but it's not really needed if we're just going for a wiki.

unfortunately, the trouble is with something like this, it can be a good thing, but it can also wind up being a drag for the person in charge of it. we had a site, with lots of stuff on it, tutorials, how too's scripts for various IDE's on and on, but things got old and out dated, the persons running things got tired and it seemed wasn't getting as much help as they needed, and let it run down to a zero point and the name went back on the net as an purchasable option. . there was some effort to revamp and turn the sight into a wiki run item but that went by the wayside rather quickly. seems there was not enough dedication to restore all that was torn down to make room for the new site. . (note some may disagree on part or a lot of the all of this, I wasn't in much on the actual site revamp attempts other than making a contribution in dollars to keep the site running, but I did pick up parts of what was going on both from public sources (here) and private ones (I knew the owner at that time) and then someone must pay for either the server space (which can be done through contribution, but takes drive to get folks going) or a computer such as you offered, to run the site on, and what do you do if that computer breaks? which even the best unit will break eventually? Dennis brown ran things for years, and kept both the site and the list in full swing, then he retired from it, we saw him once in a while with questions but that was all, and then it all ran down to zero now a real ... piece of work owns the old site name and as I stated prior to this, wants 3000 dollars for it! anyway, its going to take dedication and a lot of work to get a lot of this running, the wiki or weblog may run well once set up, I have no clue not having ever tried to start one working, but someone is going to need a lot of Patients to get it going and up to speed I think.
good luck,

    I suppose you're right. And it doesn't matter. I mean, if we're
going to do a forum, then we might as well have a whole site so
that we can extend our community for instance since this is a
programming community, why not consolidate all of the things we
do, the message board, the chatting and stuff into one place, have
Jamal's stuff, our stuff, and anyone else's stuff on here that
they think would be worthwhile to this community? And then folks
can download our demos and stuff? That way there is only one
consolidated resource for all of the blind programmers. Everybody
could get their own page and stuff.

Meh. I wasn't taking a jab at you. I looked and didn't see it, I
figured it'd come up pretty quickly if I used asp.net, which I
figured it was. Either way though, I don't care. Right now we're
the only two talking about it, so unless we get interest in it,
what forum we use is sort of irrelevant.

I'm not sure what com100 is. It's obviously a forum, but googling
for it didn't bring up anything. I don't care, at this point who
hosts it, but I really recommend something that's been widely used
for a long time and is open source; phpbb fits that build. There
are others out there that are popular too, but using an app on a
front-facing site that no one has heard of (5 minutes of googling
didn't bring up anything) is kind of a scary thought.

why? Just host it with phpbb, problem solved. It's widely used,
easy to use and incredibly easy to install. I'll host it if the
    need is there.

    I agree, this is unsettling.

I don't know if there'd be any desire for this, but does anyone
else feel that the mailing list is sort of... well... 1999ish in
its execution? We all want to be able to discuss a wide plethora
of programming topics. But plenty of people don't want to wade
through a high traffic list. There are more evolved community
formats now, from Facebook groups and Google+ circles to full
forum/wiki/community blog implementations that could be hosted on
a dedicated server. It'd allow for people to filter the discussion
they're interested in while not having to restrict topics people
can discuss, as seems to be the Catch 22 Program-L is fighting
with right now. I won't set it all up on my own. I don't care
enough, straight and simple. But maybe if I'm not running the
whole show by myself this is something that could be given some
brainstorming? It won't work though unless it has at least the
beginnings of a community willing to give it a go, and we seem
pretty entrenched for some reason in the old EMail listserv.

If this is true, I hope someone will create a third list where all

    hopefully everyone will join it.

    lists

This just came through, for those of you who aren't on the
program-l list. I know it's past the due date for our input, but I
have a couple of issues, both of which I voiced.
First, I'm kind of lost as to why Java isn't aloud to be discussed
because it's "specialized." Sure there's another list for that,
but if we're going to have "specialized" lists, why are we merging
    in the first place?
Does this mean that sodbeans discussion is out? I've kind of
followed along with that, though I haven't played with it to much.
Second, I'm still curious why this is so hush-hush. I guess I'm
worried that we're going to get forced into a list that is not
going to allow some of what we have here. Sure some of it can be
cleaned up, and George is the one to do that; he's an adept
moderator, but It almost sounds like the volume of messages is
going to be strictly controled for some reason.

There's always a leak somewhere before things can be properly

announced, isn't there? However, it won't happen until 1st October.

Yes indeed the two specialist lists are to merge. Or rather, they

will be merged into ours. It was either that, or the other list could

    possibly be closed down.

I have no doubt that it will initially swell the number of daily

messages, but I'm hoping that with some appropriate moderation, things

will keep on topic. If not, my steel ruler will be out rather

    sharpish.

Needless to say JAVA will be considered off-topic as we have a list

for that (program-java), and if the need arises for other specialist

areas, I will have no hesitation in starting an appropriate list.

Sorry you all had to find out via the jungle drums, but please stick

with us. This has been a very professional list to date, and

hopefully long may it continue that way.

    All the best,

    George Bell
