I point that out in an attempt to try to help you along, that's all.

I understand that. I guess what the point of it was, is that the prof let me do it because all the other students in the college course were doing was using wireshark and looking at the layout. I believe that I got a lot more out of the project than "ooo, shiney graph!" I'm not big on reinventing, but I do like to learn how things work. Writing a packet sniffer (or a partial one), did that. It also got me some extra credit, so I was totally happy with it.

The message was almost aimed at you more than him. I was trying to explain,
indirectly, that you can't just build everything, going forward, and that
this type of attitude is often the most common trait amongst beginning
developers. It's basically the I'll build it myself attitude.

The reason I bring it up is not to criticise, because frankly, I've got
better things to do with my lack of abundance of time, but to try to slowly convince you that things are a bit different and a bit harder in college and
later on, as a developer.

I point that out in an attempt to try to help you along, that's all.

Take care,
Sina

Just don't want to raise hopes falsely, that's all.
thanks for the all-knowing conclusions. I made a suggestion. we're in a
basic networking class, so printing out the payload and the packet fields
was good enough for that assignment. I didn't say that was what *all* people

should do, because it was the right way.
and netted me some extra credit.

For an actual college class. I can guarantee you that this will not be
sufficient. Sorry, but there are hundreds of thousans of lines of code
necessary for certain activities. Especially in a class dedicated to this
study.

Just don't want to raise hopes falsely, that's all.

wireshark doesn't work with jaws.
I just talked my professor in to letting me write my own packet sniffer.
He
was all for it, and I got a lot more out of it.

This is a bit off topic, but it seems that the people on this list will
know best: my TCP/IP class will soon be working with packet sniffers as
part of a final project, on Ubuntu. The professor wants me to use Wire
Shark, formerly known as Ethereal. I may be able to use Windows if
necessary, but the question is whether WireShark will work with Orca
and/or JAWS? If not, is there a sniffer that will work? Thanks!

Have a great day,
Alex
