I think something is causing it to terminate though, I'm not sure what that 
something could be.

    um... the port wouldn't matter, it wouldn't crash just because your 
firewall is blocking it from making outbound connections.
    I assume tcp/ip is working, as he's sending us email.

      verify the port of the connection for mysql.
      By default it is 3306. If you changed it be sure that that port is not 
blocked.
      Be sure also that tcpip protocol stack is correctly configured and 
installed.

        there is no error number after hitting execute on the last page of the 
configuration wizard, all it says is mysql has encountered an error and needs 
to close.

        at command prompt:
        C:\>mysql -u root mysql
        causes:
        ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)
