put a ; after sql command.
Also a update statemend would have a where clause.
But the ; is the problem i think.

in this line:
mysql>UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD("new password")
is the only thing i change the words inside the quotes like:
mysql>UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD("bryan123")

after that command, i got:
-> instead of mysql> and it seems locked up.

that wasn't the problem.
i think i got a bad installer.
i never completed the 5.1.31 config wizard without an error message.
i got the 5.0.67 package and it installed fine.

Check the service name if it says my sql it needs changed to MySql.
