I agree about Dell, although I have been sorely tempted to buy a laptop
again from them as Sina is managing to get big discounts on Dells because of
the number he orders.
I went to the Dell website and checked the model I wanted, and it at first 5
stars -- but then a couple weeks later it had only 3 or 3.5 stars. Go
figure. Someone didn't like their laptop...
My own experience with Dell: I had a laptop that wouldn't work. They talked
to be and I let slip that it had fallen on the floor once, and they said
that voided the warranty. So I paid through the nose for a fix. When I got
it back it still wouldn't boot -- wouldn't even read the hard drive. I
returned it to them saying they didn't fix it, and that they should get it
to reboot before they sent it back to me. They returned it without looking
at it -- same day -- and said the diagnostics all passed and that they
weren't responsible for my hard drive not working. I removed the hard drive
and connected it via USB to another laptop and the disk had everything on
it -- no corruption. I called them several times more and argued, and they
said the only thing they could do was walk me through the steps to recover
the initial factory settings, which would have zapped all my data -- I
removed my data, but the dell is still sitting in pieces in my room.

If anyone wants it I can send all of it except the hard drive.
I'm so furious at Dell for the way they handled it. They in essence told me
not to call back on that case any more.
It is an old laptop, but since it is passing the diagnostics I don't think
it is a total lost cause. I just don't have the time or or patience to
fiddle with it.

Sina -- are you still getting Dells? What is your opinion of Dell?

Hi Brian,

Wow! That is amazing!

My requirements when building a system are nearly the exact same. The only
difference is that I will use Asus Main boards.

If I have the bucks, I will choose a Plextor optical drive.

But enough, the whole thread is supposed to be about buying a lap-top and
this does not apply.

I echo the opinion, "Stay away from Dell.".

The cost for the base machine seems to be quite reasonable, but the upgrades
are hugely inflated and you void your warrantee if you take the machine to a
third party to get it upgraded. You are much better off to deal with a
local, one of computer store with an excellent reputation. I have had too
many woes with Tiger Direct products to recommend them. Their warrantee is
very difficult to collect on.

HTH

James

hi,

i should have mentioned this before, i won't touch a dell because they are
so proprietary and who knows what parts are used.
except for my hp nx9600 laptop, i build my own towers with only intel boards
or msi boards with intel chips, don't mess with amd chips, use kingston,
crucial, or patriot ram, western hard drives, and sony or liteon optical
drives though i'm not as picky on the dvd drives.
I choose good fans and hd coolers, and I'm never forced to take crapware and
will only get stuck with vista if it's my choice.
