There several blind mainframe programmers around here.

The mainframe is still a largely text based environment and poses no
major hurtles for us.

And NO, the mainframe is not going away any time soon. Companies are
still investing Billions of dollars in hardware and software for
mainframe computers. COBOL is still alive and doesn't appear to be
losing much ground either. It is changing though.

The mainframe is becoming more of a background processor and is being
used more and more as a very large database server.

I know a couple of blind people in the area where I live that came into
programming through mainframe and have moved up into management.

I know of at least one guy who is a DASD manager for a large mainframe
shop and another who is an operating system controller for a large state
university.

I'd believe almost any job on the mainframe or AS-400 is easily
accessible. I myself have been doing it for 22 years and I know others
on this list are also employed in this kind of work.
