Chris,
its not a "detector", you would use screen capturing to copy the graphic displayed on the screen, paste it into a 256 color bit map image, and upload that to them at there website, and someone from the site actually reads the image and sends you an e mail with the answer in it.

from what I am told within 15 minutes or less.

you need to sign up, and there are clear instructions on the site for capturing the image, making the file, and uploading it to them.

I also have a very small utility, though I have no clue if it works with vista/win7, though its so compacted, a lone executable, that I think it would, that can pull a screen image for you when activated, and following the directions there, you might... stress the might, be able to get software captchas and resolve them yourself, or, at least, make the image you need for Solona in a shorter set of steps (the app, as I remember, will take the snapshot, and create an image file in one set of operations, instead of two or three)

its simply called print screen (who 'da thunk it!) its on my grab bag site, and its free.

there are a brief set of instructions for attempting to get a little known feature of Microsoft office to OCR the image for you by saving it in another format which invokes the Microsoft OCR application, in case you have office and want to give it a try as well. when I get to attempting to rid my ladies comp of lingering Norton scraps from the muoy old version that was on there (2000 for sheesh sake!) I'll give it a try myself, but that's another XP machine, we don't have any vista units here, and am waiting and watching you and Hanna before I think about getting win 7 (though its looking or rather sounding good so far).

BTW, do you have any idea what they plan to call this one? or are they going to do the 2000 thing and just leave it as windows 7?

take care,

Hey, so can Solona even detect captchas in software?

I would try reinstalling Norton, then go and get Revo Uninstaller from:
http://www.revouninstaller.com/.

install it, run it, and find Norton in its main window then hit the applications key and select uninstall. this will take you to a dialog where you can select the uninstall mode shift tab once, and make sure either the third or forth radio button is selected the third option reads: "Moderate - includes the Safe mode and performs an extended scan to find all of the application's leftover information in the
most common places of the Registry and on the hard drive"

this takes a bit longer, but has a good chance of removing those pesky registry files that Norton leaves behind messing up other anti-virus applications.

the 4th possibility is the best, but as it will say, is slower than the third, but will pull everything Norton has put on your computer out by the roots of its teeth (this is what I would use for Norton).

the other option is to go to Norton's website, and get the Norton un-installation tool, but this requires sighted assistance to use, or an account with Solona:
http://www.solona.net/learn/about.php
and some time.
