I have kept the security I know Sina turned his off but I haven't had a
problem with it yet. It was a bit difficult getting Cygwin installed but if
you follow the vista install instructions it works fine.

Subject: Vista, UAC -- was: Re: in the market for a new laptop:suggetsions?

I think if and when I get a vista machine, I am going to learn to deal with
the UAC issue -- I mean keep security and deal with the prompts. The reason

is that the insecurities are rampant and a lot of headaches will be saved if

people can wean themselves off the old "root user" practices (analogous to
unix/linux). It is silly to run everything as administrator. The cost of
typing in a few passwords to install various things is a small price to pay
for losing all your data if the machine gets hacked.
This will mean that people won't be able to click on popup ads and install
nifty looking tools from off the net -- or at least it will give the user an

extra warning before he/she types in the admin password, but in reality you
don't want to have that ability.
Also it will make the computer a little less vulnerable for families where
one person is the admin and all the other accounts are not. More control in
the long run.
It's funny that unix started as a multiuser account where no one would run
as root unless absolutely necessary, even the administrator, and it has
moved onto the PC, single user market -- whereas windows started off as a
single user with a truely chaotic set of operating rules, and is moving more

toward the unix-like multiuser market.
I know windows has had multi user capabilities for a long time, but security

was a joke and almost no one ran it with security in mind.
Now Microsoft is trying to undo what it started.
Now that being said, I have not run Vista and so if any of my statements are

inaccurate, feel free to correct.
Happy hacking.

the only thing I will speak on, is some notes on vista, yes its useable, and
yes it seems more secure without additional applications than XP is out of
the box, and the search abilities is superior to XP.

now for the flip side:
1. windows mail has some issues that make it more difficult to use.
2. there are major focus issues with vista that make it a major pain in the
backside.
3. there are a number of folks talking about disappearing folders on there
drives that no answer has been found to, let alone for this trouble.
4. UAC is a major pain, but if you turn it off, you lose 80 percent of the
safety features, and so are back to relying on third party security
software, and... vista will not shut up about the fact that you turned UAC
off.

if I dug through the e mails I have on vista I am sure I could come up with
another dozen or so, but... those who like it swear its better, so it's back
to a "matter of opinion".

regards,
inthane
