From what I saw on the sci-tech list with in the year. The only thing that could slow this down is if that stupid accessibility bill passes in congress sorry to all those folks who think it's a great idea but if it passes companies like Google and Microsoft have to stop and re-asses what they are already doing in accessibility and make sure it meets a whole new set of accessibility standards. This will slow down the release of new accessible stuff because maybe the stuff they are working on don't meet it exactly. I know we could argue that point but so can their lawyers just wait and see. Oh well I am hoping google beats those laws out of the box. ken -----Original Message----- From: programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:programmingblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of qubit Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 10:28 PM To: programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [UACCESS-L] Accessible Android E-Mail and Barcode Reader Available When are they projected to be released? --le ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ken Perry" <whistler@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <programmingblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 7:48 PM Subject: RE: [UACCESS-L] Accessible Android E-Mail and Barcode Reader Available This kind of stuff is exciting because of the coming Google TV's and Google DVDR;s in the future we can even use menus and stuff on a tv that will be so cool. The IDEAL K9 E-MailR reader is accessible using Google's Talkback and other Android screenreaders. Also announced was the release of IDEAL Item IdentifierR, an Android-based barcode reader. The barcode reader makes it possible to quickly, easily, and accurately identify products by using Android smartphones to read barcodes on standard products. Both applications have been open-sourced in support of the Raising the Floor Initiative. http://raisingthefloor.net/ According to Steve Jacobs the President of IDEAL Group, "Given the efforts Google has put into Android, especially the work of their Eyes-Free Project team, we are convinced that Google is committed to making Android a world-class fully accessible platform and we want to help Google get there faster." IDEAL is also developing an open source Android web browser for the blind. In addition, IDEAL is developing an open source video magnification application that enables individuals with low vision to turn their Android smartphones into hand-held video magnifiers. Given the high cost of dedicated devices that serve these purposes today, Jacobs hopes these free, high-quality open source Android applications will be Raising the Floor of opportunities for individuals with print disabilities.
