hello,
Eclipse is not so bad as you think.
In fact after learning a little bit to use it, it is the most accessible ide in the world.
The key to use it is that it is an ide and not just a code editor.
Second you can do programming for all languages you want in a familiar interface after you learn it, you don't need to learn 5000 ides for every new language you are working in. It is true, it is not a easy interface to use from the first moment, you must understand how it works, but after you will never leave it because it is so great. You receive all top features from payed ides for free which is a great things.
Here I do Java ee, java, dotnet/c#, php developing with it.
Also I do database development and I am planing to write some plugins for eclipse for automatise database object creation.

Well, eclipse just makes no sense to me - as in, the nasty/honest version is what's the point of trying to use it?

As in, firstly, what does it offer, and how are you then meant to do basic things, like navigate what you'd call something like the parent folder of your project, etc?

Sorry, but I will have to find out from the other developers this side why they need/want to use eclipse at all if you understand what I mean, since for basic python work, edSharp is more than good enough, using it along with command line calls to test/try run things, and for windows executables, I have put together py2exe if I want to generate stand alone executables for the current stuff I have gotten around to trying out in python - all command line thus far.

Anyway, I mean, thanks for your efforts, but am not really finding any reasons why using eclipse for python development work makes much sense at all thus far..?

Stay well

Hi Jacob,
I can try to install PyDev here and see if maybe we can compare notes. I have JAWS 11, and soon 12, available. This machine is XP Professional, SP2. I forget, what were the specific issues? And if it will help you, I can see if I can extract the PyDev documentation, assuming I get it installed correctly. Maybe I'd better go and get Python first. This may take a little longer than I thought. I'll do it if you like, still, though.

Ok, just double checked in readme.htm file, and it reckons it's version 3.6.2 FWIW.

We did use something on the help menu to make sure certain plugins were installed, but I can't change the version currently have since something to do with licensing of certain plugins or something, but will just double check on that one with the guys this side as well, but it's taken them a bit of time to get to downloading even this version, with it's specific add ons, etc., so let's see.

Hi Jacob,
The version I am using is 3.6. I am working on JAWS scripts for it, so I destroyed it and installed it again, so I could make sure I was using the default settings. I don't have PyDev installed right now. Are you able to get 3.6? I forget most of what I learned about Python, so I expect to be very little help there. If you get 3.6, you can go into the Help menu and install stuff. I was thinking of trying out the Web Tools Plug-in, since I'm going to be doing a lot of HTML work soon.

The test project just tried creating was in fact a pydev project, but it didn't seem to mean much in terms of any relation to how the interface/IDE is meant to then have any real relevance to python development - let me choose items to add from a list of python relevant things, like class, etc., but still.

Sorry, but have never really looked into eclipse before, and the eclipse specific tutorial material I got along with this whole version of it, is just pretty much minimal actual text, and a bunch of scanned images, so it hasn't meant too much to me either...<smile>

Like said, I think the idea would be to allow eclipse to help manage references to classes/modules, and maybe help with compiling/wrapping the python code into then relevant executable versions or something, but not too sure on that either.

Hi Jacob,
I have no practical experience with this, but try PyDev for Eclipse.

Ok, I do have the sound effect jaws scripts installed, and have been going through some other python tutorial material, and python itself makes enough sense to me, but eclipse seems really pretty much useless/pointless, aside from the fact that I might need to use it for a specific type of work that has had a bunch of plugins installed into eclipse.

I can sort of tell it to do things like create a project, but I would then sort of expect things like solution explorers, etc., but don't seem to find anything of any real interest here...?

I am also now planning to look at the following comparison between VS and eclipse interface, but they do, unfortunately mention diagrams, etc., so it's obviously targeting sighted guys:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/library/os-eclipse-visualstudio/?ca=dgr-btw01Eclipse-VS#ibm-content

Aside from that, EdSharp works perfectly well enough/fine for me with regard to editing python source, so might need to try figure out if can in fact implement these specific plugins without using eclipse - don't see why it shouldn't be possible since think the actual eclipse IDE plugins are more related to automatic code generation/wizards, etc., but will have to double check on that one.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has done much with things like eclipse and python combinations, or if, aside from intro material along with scripts, are there any other types of material related to getting used to the jumbled up interface that eclipse seems to make use of..?

Stay well
