Not really. They are somewhat related, as you control another machine as if you were physically using it, but the approaches are different. A virtual machine is a computer you create from specialized software, like VMware Player. You install an operating system, called a guest operating system, inside this virtual machine. You can then run your favourite programs without the host operating system even knowing about it. The virtualization software tricks the host into thinking it's another computer, hence, virtual machine. Remote Desktop, however, is where you log onto a computer remotely, usually from a distance, i.e., logging on to work from home, and control the computer as if you were sitting in front of it. This requires an internet connection as another lister said.
