Jim, I have the Mingw/msys combo' on my Vista machine also. It is sort of a stripped-down Linux, and because it is simpler it sometimes works better for simple tasks than Cygwin, such as sshing to another machine. Mingw is a programming system. Msys adds some tools and functionality. We use the combo to make the Windows binary of our liblouis-liblouisxml software.
