Yes it could be, but until I hear that it it is at least as good as ABBYY Fine Reader, I don't bother to try it.

I may be wrong but I think Project GNU has an OCR program and that googlemade their OCR available as free software as well. Just found this in apt... gocr is this a ocr package? Its cmd based...
