he asked "how" to create it.
We were suggesting other solutions for him to look at. "hire thousands of programmers," is not a valid solution. Unless your flipping the bill; in that case I'd like to submit a wishlist. We don't know the reason for the question being asked. Maybe he wanted something like speakup that will read automatically from boot. Maybe he didn't want to go through the hastle of installing jaws with or without narrator. If your going to assume that after you install jaws it's a "OS with speech," then there are hundreds of other things windows is with. I can't comment on orica accessibility; I've used it and it sounded decent from my point of view, though admitedly just a bit sluggish. My solution for a full OS with speech is speakup. It does use the command line as it's main interface, but to my knowledge and with the experience I've had with other systems it is the solution that has the speech fully integrated. You won't get it to read the bios, but it reads the dmeswg as the computer loads which is extremely nice for debugging kernel issues; if windows crashes during install, your scrued unless you have sited help to know what error message it is showing.

The user that put the question asked if it would be possible to have an OS
with speech and what should be done to create it.
I only guess that he doesn't want a poor OS that just boots up and then
speaks, but that he might want to create something better than the currently
used operating systems offer, because otherwise the question would be just
one for fun.

Well, the most accessible OS with speech is to buy Windows and Jaws, and it
is much much easy and cheap to do this than to make the effort of creating
your own operating system and your own screen reader.

Linux or Solaris with Orca can't compare with Windows and Jaws from the
point of view of accessibility, so they're out of questions.
If the user that asked wants to create a better OS wwith speech, he should
create a better OS and a better screen reader than Windows and Jaws, not
than Solaris and Orca.

We weren't talking about which of Microsoft and Sun offers the best OS and
the best screen reader and his was a very poor point.
I don't agree that Sun offers a better accessible OS with speech just
because the OS and the screen reader is made by Sun, because nobody cares
which company makes the OS and the screen reader. The blind users care about
how good is the most accessible combination between an OS and a screen
reader, and for the moment this is Windows and Jaws and not Solaris and
Orca.

It is very easy to install Jaws under Windows, even blindly by using
Narrator for doing this, so after installing you can consider Windows as an
OS with a screen reader, no matter that they were made by 2 separate
companies.

So please stop recommending other combinations like using Linux, or Solaris,
or Macintosh and the screen reader they offer pre-installed, because the
user that put the question was not asking for recommendations for an OS with
a screen reader, but asked what he should do in order to create its own OS
and its own screen reader.

And I've told him that he might need the work force of thousands of
programmers if he wants to create a better combination between Windows and
Jaws, because this is the best combination, not those that use Orca.

and you do? I think your writing now for the sake of argument. Go take a
sleeping pill, we got your point, his point was a valid one.

Sorry, but I think you don't know what you are talking about.

First, I didn't say that Jaws is a Microsoft program. I said only that
the best accessibility is offered by Windows and Jaws and not by Orca and
Linux, but not even the comparison between these 2 is important, but the
fact that it is very hard to create another OS with another screen reader
built in.

Second, I know that Orca works with Linux, but Sun doesn't pretend that
they've created the most advanced Linux OS, but that they've created
Solaris, the most advanced OS.
However, Solaris is not accessible for the blind, or it is accessible but
only by using emacspeak, which has a very ugly interface and offers a
poor accessibility anyway, and I haven't tested Solaris so I don't really know if it really supports emacspeak or it is just a future plan for Sun.

By the way, have anyone tried Solaris?

don't forget that jaws is not a microsoft software and, taking software
only from the two grand companies, sun is better than microsoft.
Because, with orca you can do more than with narator from windows.
So Sun has right assuming it as the best company offering an advanced os
with speak.

Windows is an operating system with speech included. Do you want to
create a
better OS than Windows and a better screen reader than Narrator?
I guess you want to create a better one, because otherwise... why
bother?

In order to do that, you should create a company, employ a few
thousands of
good programmers and after very many years you might do it.
Sun Microsystems has tens of thousands of programmers and they pretend
that
they have created the most advanced operating system in the world, and
they
have also made one of the most used screen readers for Linux, but the
accessibility offered by their solutions is much lower than the one
offered
by Windows and screen readers like Jaws, and Sun work on their OS for
very
many years, so... it could be very hard to do what you want.

Hello; Listers, I just thought. What do I have to do to create a
operating system with speech. I just thought about this. Can this be
done? Please write back.
