I'd bet he just curls up in a ball, holds his breath, and waits...
The extreme size and power of the Waimea Bay shore break is renowned
world-wide, but surfers trying to get out into the lineup have to get
through it, and get through it they do.
I think it's the seventh photo down that gives a sense of the scale
we're talking about (at least for that one photo): note the little
figure off in the distance, and consider that it's certainly an adult.

As to the photos themselves, all I can say is "Wow!"
Utterly stunning.
