Subject: [missbird] Mating A Avocets
MISSBIRDERS,
On 28 April I visited the Philips Catfish Farm north of Yazoo City looking for
shorebirds and was rewarded by a pair of A Avocets courting in one of the drawn
down catfish ponds. As I was watching them through my scope I realized they
were pretty frisky and nudging with one another. I got the camera out just in
time to see them cross bills and copulate with camera rolling. I was lucky
enough to get these two photos-one just after bill crossing and the other
mating. You can see the longer bill of the male and the more upturned bill of
the female.
I have never seen this in 35 years of birding but it was worth the long wait.
Enjoy!
