One drawback of the new improved JPEG handler is that it can be
slower on older machines. It is possible to revert to the older
JPEG handler by renaming a file inside !PhotoDesk.
Inside !PhotoDesk.Resources.Formats.!3JPEG there are files called
"fastHandler", "slowHandler" and "Handler". By default, the slow
Handler is copied as "Handler" and used. To use the older but
faster handler, remove the file "Handler" and then COPY the file
"fastHandler" as "Handler".
Thanks for your reply Andrew. What a drawback!. No matter I can
download an image without horizontal stripes in 30 seconds on the
Raspberry Pi so all is not lost. There is no point in going back to
the old handler - it defeats the object of me upgrading.
Incidentally the Raspberry Pi is a Raspberry Pi, 2 model B so not so
old.
FYI - even on the Iyonix PD 3.14 it can load a 4.7MB JPEG in 40
seconds.
It's interesting that the fastHandler Utility file is significantly
larger than the slowHandler - just an observation which probably means
nothing. Also what a strange naming convention why not mark the
handlers as oldhandler and newhandler. Even though the newer handler
is slower it is an improvement.
Other users are reporting improved speeds with more modern hardware
like the ARMX6 but I'm not so surprised as these contain a solid-state
"harddrive".
