In the documentation it states that validation errors can be loaded into the
original form, so that data is 'recycled' in the fields, so the visitor can
correct their mistakes and press the submit button again without having to
first use the 'back button'.

I can get the validation errors to display in the original form when it loads
again (by specifying the filename in the rules text file), but when the submit
button is pressed that second time, there is a 404 error: page not found.

Can you explain how I can recycle the form as its own validation error page?
Thanks.
