Rory,
I just talked to the NSB branch supervisor, Kaylie, who says they CANNOT
deposit the check now, because, when you called them last Friday and stopped
the deposit, they stamped it on the back as not being usable (I forget the
exact wording). Therefore, the check needs to be picked up at the Congress St.
branch. As per Jon's request, we need to send it back to him.
NSB STRONGLY ADVISED THAT THE NEW CHECK BE AN "OFFICIAL" CHECK, NOT A PERSONAL
ONE. However, it does not have to be.
Does Jon have anyone who can write out the check for him to sign? I would also
urge him to send it by Registered, or at the very least Certified, mail with
delivery confirmation.
Let me know if you want me to pick up the check, though that will cause more
delay in getting it back to Jon.

Linda,
Agree.
From what we have from Jon, all we need to do is insist that Norway submit (I
almost wrote "resubmit" but they never did in the first place). Linda can you
do that? Then we can get back to Jon and his bank (I have been in touch with
his banker through email) and tell them its being sent through.
If it IS rejected and there is a fee, so be it. If you can get NB to resend
it, I'll tell Jon, and remind him that if it is rejected we will be charged.
Since he is requesting we submit it, I would expect he would reimburse for
the fee if needed. And if he doesn't, at least we have the story to tell.

Russ, you know the VP at John's bank? That's where the question lies. Will
they confirm with Jon or just reject it?

Linda,
Got this from Jon. Can you please contact Norway Bank. If it would help to
have Jon's phone number call me and I'll give it to you (my cell
831-917-3104). Otherwise, can you call Norway (774-5000) and see if you can
either order them to put it through (read Jon's instructions below), or else
retrieve the check and return it to Jon?

I don’t know much about how banks operate, and I wasn’t a party to many of
the events that bring us to this point, so my understanding of what actually
happened may be completely off. Subject to that caveat, here’s what I think
happened.
I wrote a $42,000 check to, and sent it to, Phoenix Chorale.
Phoenix Chorale took the check to Norway Bank and attempted to deposit it.
NB refused to deposit it as a $42,000 check because it thought I had written
“hundred” rather than “thousand.”
(I pause here to ask: is that how banks operate? i.e., do they compare the
deposit slip to the check and refuse to deposit the check if they see a
discrepancy? Or do they inform the customer that there’s a possible
discrepancy but deposit the check anyway, with the customer responsible for
the processing fee if the issuing bank declines to pay the check?)
NB called Coastal States Bank. I don’t understand why, since even if CSB
was willing to give NB any information over the telephone, which CSB won’t
do, at best all that NB would have learned is that the account existed and it
had sufficient funds to pay the check. The critical information NB would
have wanted, it seems to me, is whether CSB would have refused to pay the
check, and even if CSB was willing to disclose that information over the
telephone, it would need to see the check in order to do so.
(I pause here to ask: what would have happened if NB deposited the check,
and when CSB received it, someone looked at it and said, “I can’t tell if
this word is ‘hundred’ or ‘thousand?’ Would CSB have refused to pay the
check? Or would CSB have called me to find out how much I had issued the
check for?)
Here’s what I would like to do: IF NB will deposit the check for $42,000,
and IF CSB will process the check as written for $42,000 (either because it
agrees that I wrote “thousand” or because when it receives the check it can’t
read what I wrote and asks me for directions, THEN I’d like Phoenix Chorale
to deposit the check.
If that won’t work, then Rory, please return the check to me and I’ll send
out another.
