Linda,
Got this from Jon. Can you please contact Norway Bank. If it would help to have
Jon's phone number call me and I'll give it to you (my cell 831-917-3104).
Otherwise, can you call Norway (774-5000) and see if you can either order them
to put it through (read Jon's instructions below), or else retrieve the check
and return it to Jon?
Rory

I don’t know much about how banks operate, and I wasn’t a party to many of the
events that bring us to this point, so my understanding of what actually
happened may be completely off. Subject to that caveat, here’s what I think
happened.
I wrote a $42,000 check to, and sent it to, Phoenix Chorale.
Phoenix Chorale took the check to Norway Bank and attempted to deposit it.
NB refused to deposit it as a $42,000 check because it thought I had written
“hundred” rather than “thousand.”
(I pause here to ask: is that how banks operate? i.e., do they compare the
deposit slip to the check and refuse to deposit the check if they see a
discrepancy? Or do they inform the customer that there’s a possible
discrepancy but deposit the check anyway, with the customer responsible for the
processing fee if the issuing bank declines to pay the check?)
NB called Coastal States Bank. I don’t understand why, since even if CSB was
willing to give NB any information over the telephone, which CSB won’t do, at
best all that NB would have learned is that the account existed and it had
sufficient funds to pay the check. The critical information NB would have
wanted, it seems to me, is whether CSB would have refused to pay the check, and
even if CSB was willing to disclose that information over the telephone, it
would need to see the check in order to do so.
(I pause here to ask: what would have happened if NB deposited the check, and
when CSB received it, someone looked at it and said, “I can’t tell if this word
is ‘hundred’ or ‘thousand?’ Would CSB have refused to pay the check? Or would
CSB have called me to find out how much I had issued the check for?)
Here’s what I would like to do: IF NB will deposit the check for $42,000, and
IF CSB will process the check as written for $42,000 (either because it agrees
that I wrote “thousand” or because when it receives the check it can’t read
what I wrote and asks me for directions, THEN I’d like Phoenix Chorale to
deposit the check.
If that won’t work, then Rory, please return the check to me and I’ll send out
another.
