Thanks Margaret. I have a few points.
I am in New York helping Morgan and can't give a detailed response yet
(I'm bussing back today). But here are some things:
1. The salary doesn't belong in the job description
2. I want the AD to supervise all of the artistic functions. In
particular, the AD should make sure directly or indirectly, that sheet
music is prepared and ready for each week. This means copies are clear,
punched, and collated. Collation should emphasize usability. For
example, a piece of music with only two sides should be distributed so
it lays flat across both sides of a binder, not printed on two sides of
a single sheet. The same goes for any piece that is an even number of
pages (i.e., minimize the page turns), unless there is an over-riding
reason to do it differently.
3. In order to ensure enough time to prepare sheet music as in 2., the
complete reportoire for each rehearsal must be available the preceding
week. If there needs to be an exception to this, it should be something
unavoidable. If the AD needs the assistance of an active Music
Committee in order to achieve this goal, then she should specify this.
It is the Board's responsibility to see that the required assistance is
provided, but that assistance must be requested by the AD in a timely
manner. Obviously a side-benefit of this is that singers (such as yours
truly) who cannot sight-sing have the opportunity to
adequately prepare for the introduction of new pieces, which should
greatly benefit those members who can sight-sing and can progress at a
rate more appropriate for them.
By the way, Deirdre called me today and asked some questions about her
salary that I found uncomfortable. I told her I could only discuss
these with the assent of the Board, or at least one of the
co-presidents, but she declined to pursue that. Among other statements,
she said it was urgent to resolve issues concerning a salary increase.
I felt I had to say something, so I just encouraged her to prepare her
thoughts regarding the job description, even to document them if she
wished. I hope it was at least ok to say that. I was at a bit of a loss.
