Dear colleague:
Please join us for the Pediatric Head and Neck Surgical Society meeting to be
held in conjunction with AAO-HNS in Atlanta.
Meeting time: October 7, 2018 at 7:00 pm.
Location: The Gold Room at Hampton + Hudson Community Bar and Restaurant at
299 N. Highland Ave NE, Atlanta, in the Inman Park area
(http://www.hamptonandhudson.com<http://www.hamptonandhudson.com/>).
I’ve been assured by our Atlanta colleagues that this will be a good meeting
place in a cool area, and not far from downtown
(https://www.tripsavvy.com/worlds-coolest-neighborhoods-inman-park-atlanta-4061429).
And as usual, we will try to keep the cost below $50/person.
As a reminder, and for those of you receiving this invite for the first time,
our goal is to discuss interesting and complex topics in pediatric head and
neck surgery, among a group of otolaryngologists encompassing the range of
subspecialties within our field. Participants are encouraged to share surgical
experiences and innovations, as well as complications. We foresee a forum in
which complex/rare/interesting/difficult cases can be discussed in depth among
a group of surgeons that is open to honest discussion and disagreement.
With this in mind, at the last meeting, we discussed pediatric free flap
surgery and considerations in microtia repair, with great, lively discussion
ensuing. At past meetings, we have discussed topics including difficult airway
reconstruction, thyroid surgery, skull base surgery, complex vascular
anomalies, and adult VPI.
As you know by now, we are saddened to have lost one of our greats this summer
– Jim Sidman. Jim was instrumental in bringing PHNSS to life from its infancy
to obtaining 501(c)(3) status, and serving as director on our board. He wanted
to stay behind the scenes during this process, but the vision for this society
and its direction stems from many of his philosophies. In honor of Jim, we are
requesting submissions for the biannual Jim Sidman “Go Long” case presentation.
This is a phrase Jim would say to those who presented a very hard case with no
easy answer. As Jim thrived on treating complex entities, you can imagine that
he was not one to shy away from most things (unless it involved the ear). As
such, a “Go Long” case should be a very difficult surgical case with at least
one of the following qualities:
- may or may not have a solution
- possibly no one has seen or done before
- does not have an easy answer
- makes you think outside the box
The board will review submissions, and select one “Go Long” case to be
recognized at each PHNSS meeting moving forward.
For the upcoming meeting, our topic will be difficult pediatric trauma cases.
If you have an interesting case or question to present (whether it's been
treated, or yet to be and you'd like advice), please send a succinct case
presentation in powerpoint format to
rajpetersson@xxxxxxxxx<mailto:rajpetersson@xxxxxxxxx>. We will have AV
capabilities with a laptop and screen. (Please keep in mind, that due to time
constraints, we may not be able to discuss all submissions.)
Finally, we have created an email Listserv, so that going forward, group
discussions and group information can be shared in an efficient manner. This
will allow for crowd-based discussions in real-time. To sign up for this list,
please send an email to
phnss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:phnss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> with
'subscribe' in the subject line.
If you know of someone who might be interested and not included on this
ever-expanding email list, please forward on to them. We will communicate via
old school email and the listserv until we have everyone on the listserv. If
interested in joining us in October, please reply to
rajpetersson@xxxxxxxxx<mailto:rajpetersson@xxxxxxxxx>. We are looking forward
to another session of fun discussion of cool cases over drinks and food!
