do you have enough free-space on your system drive? If your drive is too 
full windows might not have enough space for the 'virtual memory file'.

general rule of thumb was virtual memory should be about 2 to 3 times 
your system memory up to about a gb.
so if you have 256mb memory try setting virtual memory to 768mb.

remember to reboot after making the changes.
