Lil,
The modem is already connected to the internet. The output of the modem
will go to the new router's USB input and your three systems will plug into
the router's ethernet ports. For most routers, that's all there is to it.
The router is set up at the factory to dish out internet (Local Area
Network) IP's as needed, so each of your systems will get one without you
having to change any settings. The router also handles feeding the internet
to all three systems, so there's nothing for you to do there, either.

Before you make the physical connections, you'll want to make sure that
all three systems are using different computer names, but the same exact
workgroup name. In XP, you can do both by right clicking on My Computer and
selecting Properties. In the Computer Name tab, look at the line that says
"Full computer name:" and make sure that no other system has that same name.
Each one must be unique within the network. While you're in that tab, take
a look at what's shown next to "Workgroup" and make sure it's the same on
all three systems. If either needs to be changed, just click on the Change
button and have at it. You'll want to reboot when you're done. To keep it
simple, you can just use the default name of 'workgroup' or you can change
it to something else up to 12 characters (numbers &/or letters) with no
spaces. Once these two items are verified in all three systems, turn off
all computers and make the physical connections. When you're done, turn on
one of the systems to introduce it to the new network.

As you turn on each system for the first time after making the
connections, your firewall apps should tell you that a new network has been
discovered and they'll want to know how you wish them to handle it. The
answer to this question depends on the firewall since each one handles these
things differently. Generically speaking, you'll have to tell it the
workgroup name you gave to all of the systems and also to put it this new
network in the trusted zone. The firewall will then be set up to allow file
sharing among the three systems if desired (ask about this in a separate
thread if you want to do that). If that's not enough of an answer, let us
know what firewalls ou are running on each system so we can better target
the answer to your needs.

Peace,
Gman
