If you believe you're going to be better off with more than 2GB, then I 
would agree that the additional should be provided by two matched 512MB 
sticks of the same speed and rating as the 2GB set already installed.

I have little that I can tell you about the old system except that the 
blinking lights and the noise you heard have nothing to do with the RAM. 
Clicking noises usually indicate a failing fan, storage drive or power 
supply.  It could also be that a cable has fallen into a fan and is getting 
whacked every time a fin passes by.  Of course, that would produce a rather 
rapid fire clicking sound that would likely scare the bubbles out of anyone.
