I am gathering that the router has a firewall - but... I'm not sure what its
status is, or if it really protects the computer. I have anti-virus &
anti-spyware progs on here.
Thanks!

Depends on if you have a router or not. My firewall is built
into the router thingie and my Wireless DSL owner does not want
another one on my computer. That's fine by me -- less hassle
:-)

But I do have the antivirus, and anti-spyware. I think a
firewall like zone alarm or something similar is just so your
computer is in stealth mode so it can't be pinged and be
recognized. The techs know more and will tell you if I have my
head up my tush on this.

GOOD NEWS!
My son got it to print!
He left me a note -
"this was printed from your laptop, the network problems were
caused by the software firewalls that we all have
installed/running on the computers, to acutally use the file
sharing and the printer sharing they must be disabled. ....
re-enable the firewall in the laptop if you take it out"
so - what gives with this? now I have firewalls turned
off -that's not so safe, is it?
I have Kerio - the free one, on my main computer. The laptop is
still running the free norton that came on it - for about
another month.
He doesn't think it's any big deal to not have the firewalls - I
think it is - thoughts?

THANKS!!!
