Torri,
This is just a thought. I have seen corrupt profiles
cause problems like this in the past. Although thats
on NT machines.
Also if your computer hasn't been defragmented in a
long time this will slow your computer down at random
times.
It could also be due to installing and uninstalling,
that the registry is extremely large.

I don't have much experience with XP.
You can try this nice little registry cleaner. Works
pretty good.
