Hi Cowboy Beg to differ with you Cowboy and this is why, in a general sense. A router is so much different then a switch, in theory and in the beginning anyway. Now days the more expensive switches are so close to routers that it is hard to tell the difference. In addition to what you stated, which I agree with, Routers (and switches which function like routers) use their own IP Address for Traffic (Internet or Intranet). A switch when used on Intranet (LAN) (that does not function like a router) set ups, usually receives a message and looks up the destination address in its tables and sends the message out a individual port that connects to the destination. A router is and was design to check the conditions of the Internet system and make best use of its findings in sending its message using RIP 1 & 2, BGP and a few other Internet routing protocols. (Where a switch was not designed or intended to do that, at least in the beginning) A router can have a (or do what a switch does for an LAN or Intranet network) a switch on the back end of it and that is keep track of which port what network machines are on and send the message out that particular one port and not out every port. Now if the router has a hub on the back end of it, it will not do what the switch does, it will send the incoming out every port instead of just one port. A switch was initially designed to direct traffic in the Intranet and separate different networks from others in the Intranet (or LAN, if you prefer). A router can and does this also. Over time, manufactures started to blend the two designs together to make each function like the other. In the hierarchy of devices, the router is usually given a (at least) one step above a switch. Life is what happens in between plans.
