No, but Windows' desktop is a separate virtual environment that's active at
all times (it can even handle web content). As part of Windows primary GUI
(Graphical User Interface), it uses up a relatively significant amount of
resources all by itself and doesn't need a boost by trying to handle the
needs of another program running on top of it. The desktop is also rather
slow at giving back used system resources, so it may affect the rest of your
computing session. This is the same reason why you'll see a lot of advice
on keeping the desktop clear of unnecessary shortcuts and such, assuming you
occasionally surf through different advice-giving sites. Even simple
shortcuts will waste valuable resources if they're sitting on your desktop.
You can see the running GUI process by closing all folder windows and then
launching Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL) and looking for the only
"explorer.exe" entry listed. If you have any other explorer windows open
(including My Computer), it becomes much more difficult to figure out which
one belongs to the GUI itself.
